At the top of the Fairtrade boom is Cologne: from this month, the city will be able to call itself the “capital of Fair Trade”. Cologne prevailed against 100 other applicants throughout Germany.
According to a report in the local newspaper Kölner Stadtanzeiger, the city of Cologne has submitted 50 projects to the Fairtrade competition, which is endowed with 60,000 euros. Project examples range from fair-trade roses at the Cologne Carnival to initiatives such as the eco-exchange festival for design and sustainability to numerous Cologne schools, which as Fair Trade Schools have firmly anchored fair trade in the school concept.
As the Kölner Stadtanzeiger reports, Cologne wants to promote the topic of fair trade in other areas as well, for example in the fashion sector. As a start, 77 Cologne fashion stores are to stock ecologically and fairly produced clothing, which will then be presented by the new Cologne shopping guide “Buy Good Stuff”.
