The city of Cologne wants to involve the public in the early consideration of a new east-west subway system, as reported by the local newspaper Kölner Stadtanzeiger. The citizens will have the chance to give their opinion on three different variants of a new subway tunnel.
As reported by the Kölner Stadtanzeiger, the Cologne public transport companies (KVB) have already noticed an increase in passenger numbers along the east-west axis of the city. A partial tunnelling of the route would also make the connection faster.
The three variants differ mainly in terms of the length of the tunnels. This is a decisive factor in many respects. On the one hand, a longer tunnel makes the project more expensive. On the other hand, a longer tunnel means a larger car-free zone, that could be redesigned for the use of pedestrians and cyclists.
